On this episode, a simple but powerful relaxation and anti stress exercise.
Hey guys, welcome back to the show. I'm Steven Mathis. Thank you for listening. I appreciate you. Tension is our enemy. Tension is the enemy of health. It is the enemy of our mental and emotional well being, our physical well being. Tension is where pain comes from. Tension limits our physical functionality.
And tension affects our mental and emotional state. In fact, our emotional stuff, whether that's anxiety or sadness or any other kind of emotional stuff, is stored in the body as physical tension. So releasing physical tension in our body is a very high Return on investment activity, and it's something that can benefit you in so many ways, and I can guarantee you you're carrying more tension than you think.
We carry a lot of tension that we're often not even aware of. So you might be aware when, you know, a particular muscle maybe gets tight from training or you sleep funky and your neck is kind of tight or whatever random tension pops up into your awareness. You'll occasionally become aware of those things.
But we're all carrying so much tension really in our entire body to some degree that we're often not at all aware of. So I want to give you a very simple but very effective exercise. to practice physical relaxation. And when you can deeply physically relax, you will find that your mind becomes more relaxed.
You will find that your emotions become more calm and relaxed. You'll find that you can focus better, that you have more positivity. You'll find that you physically perform better without question. The more we can release tension, the better. So here's how this technique works. It's very simple.
Essentially what we're going to do is we're going to start with intentional relaxation. Some intentional letting go. And then we're going to shift into using visualization and the power of your mind and your imagination to actually go to deeper levels of relaxation. So you want to practice this when you're laying down.
You can lay on a bed, a couch, the ground. I find a bed to be a great place to practice this because you can feel and work with the sensation of your body kind of sinking down into the bed. But anywhere you can lie flat is fine. So you're going to lay flat on your back with your eyes closed and. The first thing you're gonna want to do is just take a few deep breaths, kind of connect with your breath, breathe in through your nose, and out through your mouth, and as you breathe out through your mouth, start to exhale some of that tension.
Then, you're gonna go... Step by step through each part of your body and just let go a little bit. So you'll start at your head and work your way down all the way to your toes and go part by part and just let go a little bit. So starting with your head, you can start with your face or your scalp or your jaw and just let go a little bit.
Just use your intention to consciously kind of let go of a little bit of the tension. And you'll find that you can when you just decide to. Let go a little bit. You're you'll realize that, Oh, there was actually more tension there than I thought that I can let go of. So make a couple of passes through your body where you go head to toe.
So start with your face and your jaw and then go into your neck and your shoulders and your arms and go piece by piece and consciously let go a little bit. And then again, after you make one pass doing that, make one more pass through your body. Doing that same thing, consciously letting go a little bit more, and you'll find at this point that you're pretty relaxed and you'll also find that there was a lot of tension there that you've already been able to release, and that's a very good thing.
But now we can use our imagination and visualization to take it further, and we really can take it to much deeper levels of relaxation this way. So there's a few different things that you can visualize. That will help you do this. You're going to imagine your body in some different shapes and forms to allow your mind, to allow that automatic inner mechanism to relax you to deeper and deeper, deeper levels.
The first thing You can do is imagine that you're like a marionette doll where your joints are all just connected by loose strings. And the more that you can really feel into that visualization and the more detail that you can imagine that with, the more you're going to find that you relax. And there's a few different visualizations here and you can practice and figure out which one works best for you.
And you may find that you have kind of a favorite among them. The next one is you can imagine that your arms and legs are like limp spaghetti noodles and Really feel into that visualization My favorite personally, especially if you're laying on a bed and you can use all of them Right, but my favorite personally is to imagine that your arms and your legs are encased in concrete and they're heavy And when you're seeing this visualization You'll imagine your arms and your legs sinking down into the bed because they're so heavy.
So this is a very simple process. Again, you're making a couple passes where you're consciously letting go of each part. And then you're going in and you're using your imagination. You could totally come up with other things to imagine and visualize. But those are a few examples. Imagining that you're a marionette doll kind of connected by strings.
Imagining that your body is made of limp spaghetti noodles or... Again, imagining that your arms and legs are encased in concrete, and they're heavy, and they're sinking down into the bed. What you'll find is that when you go into those visualization pieces, it will take you to much deeper levels of relaxation.
And this might sound like, Oh, you know, I don't really need to relax that much. I'm fine. And it might be something that you maybe think, Oh, you know, I'll keep that in mind for the future if I'm feeling really tense. As I said at the beginning, you're carrying more tension than you realize. I can almost guarantee you that you are.
And releasing that is such a powerful way. to increase our health and our vitality and our mental and emotional well being. It will put you more into a state of peace and flow. It will put you into a state where you can focus better and perform better. So practice this. Try it. I would love to hear how this works for you.
